Digital Printing Vs. Offset Printing

What is Digital Printing?

Digital printing uses powdered toner which is fused to the paper using very high heat from a laser. CMYK Toners are transferred to the stock using a static belt to create the printed image. PMS colours are harder to achieve as they must be created using a blend of CMYK toner, however, some colours can be a lot more vibrant as toner sits on top of the paper and does not seep into the paper as ink does.

What is Offset Printing?

Offset printing uses a series of plates to transfer ink onto the paper. One plate per colour is used (usually CMYK) and the plates are aligned perfectly to lay each colour on top of the last to create the full spectrum. Usually you are charged per plate for printing. PMS inks are also used to get an exact colour match each and every time.

Benefits of Digital Printing

Clients with small run print orders benefit from digital printing as there is less set-up time involved and less waste material. Offset printing is charged per colour for the amount of colours used in your artwork, digital printing is the same price whether one colour or 10 colours.

Digital printing is pretty much a 'one click' process. There is no need for make-ready, plate manufacture, mounting and registration. There are less people and fewer skills required and less time needed to set up a print run.

With digital printing there is less waste and harmful materials used in the print process. Offset printing requires the production of film plates using photo chemicals and if there are any changes to the job, new plates need to be made and the old ones discarded. Also due to the process there is very little wasted stock.

Digital print files are easier to store and update, and digital printing allows for better customisation such as variable data and the ability to print small amounts of a job at one time.

MouseMatters uses a high quality digital printing process to achieve the best possible outcome for your mouse mats, countermats, coasters and bookmarks. To guarantee your mouse mat will work with any and all mice we manipulate the printing process slightly to allow the mouse to function correctly, regardless of the artwork printed on the mouse mat.
